An increasing number of people are visiting the Sunshine Coast for a range of events, latest data shows.

Booking data provided by Visit Sunshine Coast has highlighted the positive impact of the region’s mass-participation sports events to the local tourism industry and businesses.

It showed that hotel occupancies were projected to be more than 75 per cent for the weekend of the Mooloolaba Triathlon, which was well above what was projected for the following weekends.

The data also showed the impact of the 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, affectionally known as the Aussies, from April 13-21, with a forecast occupancy 10 per cent higher than the week prior.

Several thousand competitors, officials and supporters are expected for the Aussies, which will be held at three beaches: Maroochydore, Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba.

“We want the Sunshine Coast to be recognised as Australia’s premier regional events destination where major events deliver maximum results,” Sunshine Coast Council’s head of economic development Chris Le Serve said.

The Aussies will be held on the Sunshine Coast in 2024.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel said events provided a compelling reason for people to travel to the Sunshine Coast.

“We see a huge boost to our hotel occupancies during major events such as the Mooloolaba Triathlon and the Aussies,” he said.

The Coast’s reputation as a sporting host is also set to grow leading towards the Olympic and Paralympic Games Brisbane 2032.

Sunshine Coast Council, an official co-host for the Games, is proposed to host nine Olympic and Paralympic events across four locations.
