A new dog exercise area could be added to a popular Coast park, although funding has not yet been allocated to build it.

Sunshine Coast Council is seeking community feedback on a concept plan for a future dog exercise area at The Friendship Park in Maroochydore.

The park is on the corner of Millwell Road and Allora Drive and can also be accessed via a laneway from Arana Court.

It currently features a shaded playground, open space for kick and throw activities, picnic facilities, a shelter, barbecues, connecting pedestrian pathways and street parking.

Residents have until November 13 to provide feedback on how they currently use the park, what they value about it and the facilities they would like to see included.

The project is part of the council’s Dog Exercise Area Regional Plan and Network Blueprint 2025-2045, which identified a need for improved access to dog exercise opportunities in the Maroochydore area.

The park was selected after the council assessed a range of potential sites against criteria including size, accessibility, parking, environmental considerations, existing park use, impacts on nearby residents and operational requirements.

While residents are being asked for their views, council said feedback would form only part of its decision-making process.

“Community feedback is an important part of the decision-making process. However, it will not determine whether a dog exercise area is delivered,” council states on their website.

Feedback will be considered alongside technical investigations, environmental assessments, operational and legislative requirements and available funding.

A community pop-up session will be held at The Friendship Park on November 4 from 3pm to 4.30pm, allowing residents to speak with the project team and provide feedback.

The consultation period began on October 19 and closes on November 13.

Council expects to finalise the concept plan in late 2026 or early 2027. A timeline for construction has not been determined.
