A historic Sunshine Coast town has its first fenced off-leash area, which includes 2000sqm of open space.

Calls for a Yandina dog park were answered last year, when Sunshine Coast Council confirmed plans for it.

The facility has now opened at Tea Tree Park, which is off Pioneer Road on the eastern side of town.

The new space features fencing, turf, a concrete pathway, seating, dog tap and drinking bowls.

Councillor David Law said the project was a response to community feedback and a step towards supporting active, healthy lifestyles for residents and their pets.

“Following community consultation and feedback, this new fenced dog off-leash area covers … about the size of a traditional footy field,” he said.

“Our off-leash areas are more than just places to play: they’re hubs for social connection and wellbeing, for both dogs and their owners.

“I’m very excited to see the community enjoy this new facility.”

It’s believed to be the first fenced dog park in the history of the town, which was established in the mid-19th century.

Dogs from around the area finally have an off-leash park to enjoy.

Cr Law said the location was chosen to minimise impact on existing open spaces while making the most of existing park infrastructure.

Council invited the Yandina community to have their say on a preferred location for a dog exercise area in 2023. About 95 per cent of participants supported the idea.

Tea Tree Park now joins a network of 47 dog exercise areas across the Sunshine Coast, including 22 fenced parks, 14 unfenced areas and 11 beach sections.
