A man has been fined after being detected speeding twice by Bruce Highway patrol officers in a short period of time.

Police intercepted the 23-year-old man from Noosa, after observing him overtaking at 155km/h in a 100km/h zone near Coles Creek at about 4.15pm.

Police issued him with a traffic infringement notice for the high-end speeding offence, carrying a penalty of eight demerit points, a six-month licence suspension and a $1986 fine.

The officers also noticed the vehicle had an illegally altered licence plate and the driver was fined a further $345.

Less than 10 minutes after receiving the fine from State Highway Patrol, officers from Gympie Highway Patrol detected the driver travelling 90km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Old Bruce Highway near Traveston.

The driver received a further traffic infringement notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 20km/h, but less than 30km/h, and received a further four demerit point penalty and $777 fine.

Acting Inspector Specialist Operations Paul Kelly said being intercepted for speeding twice in such a short timeframe demonstrated a severe disregard for road safety.

“It is always disappointing to see a driver travelling at such high speeds,” he said.

However, to be intercepted again for speeding just minutes after the first intercept shows a complete disregard for the law, the driver’s own safety, and the safety of other road users.

“Speed limits exist to protect all road users, and choosing to ignore them is a reckless action which risks lives.

“This behaviour is unacceptable, and police will continue to take enforcement action against those who choose to endanger lives on Queensland roads.”
