A new shelter has been delivered at a popular beach access point.
The shelter is at Beach Access 124 in Mudjimba, providing shade and cover on the northern side of the deck.
Sunshine Coast Council councillor Taylor Bunnag announced the project in a Facebook post on July 31, describing the deck as a much-loved spot for locals of all ages.
The post mentioned the shelter also had lighting at night that met turtle lighting requirements.
The project was delivered by a local contractor, with assistance from council’s internal design team.
Members of the public subsequently commented about the cost of the project.

Cr Bunnag said the shelter had been completed at a cost of $84,000, well within its approved budget of $115,000, including design and approval requirements.
He said the final construction cost was consistent with similar coastal shelters delivered by council.

The project was delivered in response to feedback from local residents.
“The new beach shelter at Mudjimba Beach access 124 has been well received by the community, with many residents welcoming the additional shade and improved amenity along the beachfront,” Cr Bunnag said.
He told SCN the location, design and materials had been carefully selected to balance durability, functionality and value for money while responding to requests for improved shade.
Cr Bunnag added the project had been competitively procured through council’s tender process, with a number of submissions received and evaluated.
“Building in a frontline coastal environment required more resilient materials, engineering and state government development approvals so the structure could withstand harsh coastal conditions and meet environmental requirements.
“With typical maintenance, the shelter is expected to provide a community asset for decades to come.”
