A natural and unique park has earned international plaudits, which should further boost its appeal.

The Kings Beach Park and Community Precinct has been awarded the Green Flag Award, for setting a benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces around the world.

It is only the fourth Queensland park to receive the accolade, joining South Bank and Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane and the Chinchilla Botanic Parkland in the Western Downs.

Winning a Green Flag Award brings a wealth of benefits, from the status of being affiliated with a prestigious awards program through to tangible benefits such as boosting tourism and opening up revenue opportunities.

Visitors make the most of the precinct.

Sunshine Coast Council Divisional Councillor Terry Landsberg said, via a council press release, that the precinct was a “premier beachside destination for community recreation, tourism and events”.

“Successfully being awarded a Green Flag Award acknowledges the overall vision for Kings Beach Park and Community Precinct to capture the mountains to the sea character of the city,” he said.

“The vision also complements and reflects the natural and unique environments of Caloundra and provides a safe, family-oriented recreation and leisure precinct with opportunities for economic and social benefits.”

Manager parks and gardens Nicholas Coluccio said maintaining open spaces for the  community was one of council’s priorities.

“Many of our staff work tirelessly in maintaining this particular park and I’m really proud that their work has been recognised,” he said.

Council was also recently recognised at a state and national level for the Sunshine Coast Recreation Parks Plan 2021-2031.

The Green Flag Award fits in with council’s Environment and Liveability Strategy, which provides long-term direction to guide growth and shape a sustainable future for our region.

The Green Flag Award is a non-profit international accreditation program that recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces.

Originating in England in 1996, today the Green Flag Award has been bestowed on 2400 locations in 17 countries around the world.

The program is managed internationally by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, alongside a network of national operators in several countries.
