A key waste facility on the Sunshine Coast has been forced to close after a fire broke out in the early hours of this morning.

Noosa Council’s Resource Recovery Centre on Eumundi Noosa Road at Doonan remains shut following a blaze in the site’s steel stockpile area.

Firefighters attended the scene overnight and have since contained the fire, but crews remain on site as safety assessments continue.

Council has confirmed the facility will stay closed until the area is declared safe for staff and the public.

In the meantime, residents needing to dispose of green waste have been directed to an alternative site, with the Cooroy Waste Transfer Station opening outside its usual schedule.

Located at 191 Mary River Road, Cooroy, the transfer station – typically open only on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays – is accepting green waste today to help ease disruption.

Fire authorities were still on the scene as of Wednesday afternoon. Picture: Noosa Council.

However, Council has advised the site is limited to smaller vehicles, including cars, utes and trailers, and cannot accommodate trucks.

Authorities have also issued a public health advisory as smoke from the fire lingers across parts of the region.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is urging residents in Noosaville, Tewantin and surrounding areas to remain indoors, keeping windows and doors closed to minimise exposure to smoke and odour.

While the fire has been contained, conditions at the Doonan site are still being monitored, with safety remaining the priority before any reopening.

The council says it is working to reopen the resource recovery centre as soon as possible and has thanked the community for its patience during the disruption.
