Sunshine Coast Council has restored its Australia Day Awards after locals called for their revival.
The awards were rebadged as the Sunshine Coast Biosphere Community Awards, largely to promote the region’s UNESCO status, and presented in June for the past two years.
The move drew criticism from federal MP Andrew Fisher, who labelled it ‘woke nonsense’, and prompted calls from locals to bring back the old format.
Now, authorities have restored the customary awards. Labelled the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Community Awards, they will be presented January as usual. Nominations are being taken for the 2026 edition.
Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the return of the awards was a direct response to community feedback and a desire to recognise those who support others in the region.
“These awards are about acknowledging the passionate volunteers, the quiet achievers, the creative minds and the groups who make a real difference to our community,” she said.

“Whether it’s someone running a weekly community meal, mentoring young people, coordinating local events or building stronger connections through sport and the arts, this is an opportunity to recognise their contribution to the Sunshine Coast.
“These are the everyday citizens who work tirelessly to make our Sunshine Coast a better place, and this is their time to shine.”
The awards will be held on January 23, with six categories open for nomination: Citizen of the Year, Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, Community Group or Organisation, Creative Arts, and Healthy and Active.
Nominations will close on November 30 and can be submitted online on the council’s website.
Council will continue to support the Sunshine Coast Biosphere Community Awards, launching in March and culminating in a June ceremony.
The awards will honour individuals and organisations who champion sustainability and the values of our UNESCO-designated Biosphere.
Award categories will be shaped in partnership with the Biosphere Community Advisory Group, ensuring they reflect the heart of the region’s identity. The biosphere includes protecting the environment and celebrating culture, fostering inclusive communities, supporting sustainable industries, encouraging innovation and promoting learning.
