A record number of runners hit the road for the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival at Alexandra Headland on Sunday.

About 12,000 people took part in the event, which was held on closed roads and attracted a huge crowd.

It was held on the same day the women’s Olympic marathon was contested in Paris.

The Sunshine Coast will host the Olympic and Paralympic marathons in 2032.

Robert Collins and Milly Clark won the men’s and women’s divisions of the feature race on Sunday, in 2hr27min51sec and 2hr37min07sec respectively.

Liam Bouldin and Lisa Weightman won the half marathon, Tommy Campbell and Michelle Edwards won the 10km, Rhett Baker and Olga Firsova won the 5km and Bodhe Franks and Scarlett Van Den Hurk won the 2km. Weightman controversially missed selection for the Paris Games.

The festival started in 2012.
