The renewal of a popular section of coastal pathway is finished, with the opening of a new elevated boardwalk.

The Alexandra Headland Coastal Pathway Upgrade is set to deliver a safer, more accessible and picturesque journey through one of the region’s most spectacular locations.

The upgrade has transformed about 680m of coastal pathway through Alex Bluff Foreshore Park, widening the previous 1.8m pathway to a 3.5m shared path.

A feature of the project is the new elevated boardwalk, which provides an accessible connection through the forested section of the park, replacing a narrow and steep section that created challenges for people of all abilities.

The project forms part of the Sunshine Coast’s 73km Coastal Pathway, stretching from Bells Creek in the south to Coolum in the north.

Sunshine Coast mayor Rosanna Natoli said the revamped area would provide lasting benefits for the community and enhance one of the region’s most-loved active transport and recreation routes.

“This Coastal Pathway is one of the Sunshine Coast’s most treasured assets, used every day by residents and visitors getting out and being active or pausing for a moment to take in the sweeping views of the coastline,” she said.

“Importantly, this upgrade removes a key accessibility barrier along the route and means more people can enjoy this stunning stretch between Alex Headland and Mooloolaba, regardless of their age, mobility or ability.

“The elevated boardwalk is a real highlight. It gently guides users through a change in the landscape while protecting the natural environment and opening up beautiful new perspectives of Alex Bluff.

“Whether you’re heading out for a morning run, a walk with the family, a bike ride, checking the surf or taking in the views, this new pathway provides a safer, smoother and more enjoyable experience.”

Key features of the upgrade include a 3.5m-wide shared pathway to improve safety and accessibility; a new 110m elevated boardwalk through the forest, designed to be wheelchair accessible and cycle safe; a viewing platform; regular seating and shade trees (balanced with open view corridors); and landscaping to enhance the natural environment; lighting for pedestrian safety that is wildlife-friendly.

A new custom seating project ‘The Corner’ is in production and will be installed early 2027.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson hailed the project.

“It delivers new seating and viewing areas, lighting, and landscaping: improving accessibility to one of the Sunshine Coast’s greatest natural assets and making it easier for people to walk, run and cycle,” she said.

The upgraded path is significantly wider.

“The upgrade also strengthens the connection to the recently improved Mooloolaba Northern Parklands pathway in my Maroochydore electorate.”

The Alexandra Headland Coastal Pathway Upgrade and Kings Beach Coastal Pathway received $4.1m joint funding by the Australian Government and Queensland Government, and $2.39m from Sunshine Coast Council under the South East Queensland (SEQ) Liveability Fund, a commitment in the SEQ City Deal.

The SEQ City Deal is a partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Council of Mayors (SEQ) that will deliver long-lasting benefits to the region.
