A large section of walkway has been renewed and opened to the public at one of the Sunshine Coast’s most well-known locations.

The stretch of path at Alexandra Headland is wider and includes a range of features, including a new vantage point that offers sweeping views.

A Sunshine Coast Council representative detailed the changes to the area.

“The Alexandra Headland Coastal Pathway Upgrade has reached a significant milestone, with the majority of the new coastal pathway now open to the community, including the new viewing platform overlooking the coastline,” they said.

About 400m of pathway is now available for use.

The old 1.8m-wide path has been widened to a 3.5m shared pathway, “creating a safer and more comfortable experience for walkers, runners, riders and families”.

The upgrade also includes a new viewing platform, additional seating, shade trees, landscaping, wildlife-friendly lighting and design features that reflect the coastal character of Alex Bluff Foreshore Park.

“Please be mindful some landscape areas need some establishment time before full access is available,” the spokesperson said.

Improvements to shelters were also largely completed on Friday.

But the installation of an elevated boardwalk and some landscaping is still in progress.

The 110m boardwalk is expected to open in late September, pending weather and site conditions.

Sunshine Coast News previously reported, in July, that it was delayed, largely due to a “material supply issue”.

It will replace a steep, narrow section of pathway with an accessible route suitable for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. It will offer shaded rest points and ocean views.

“Council thanks the community for its patience and support as these final stages are delivered,” the spokesperson said.

The 650m $4.2 million Alexandra Headland Coastal Pathway Upgrade is between Alexandra Headland and Mooloolaba.

The path is a favourite location for runners, walkers, riders and tourists, largely due to its views along the coastline and its proximity to popular beaches.

The upgrade is funded by the federal, state and local governments.

There is further work being done at the nearby Mooloolaba foreshore, including a new seawall, parkland and amenities.
