Overnight stays for self-contained recreational vehicles are set to return to a Sunshine Coast sportsground under a six-month trial.
Beerwah Sportsground’s short-term camping facility permanently closed in May 2023 after the volunteer-run Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee dissolved and handed operational control of the site to Sunshine Coast Council.
The new trial will allow up to 12 sites for motorhomes and caravans equipped with their own toilets, showers and power.
A council spokesperson said the trial followed strong support from the local business community.
The community advised councillor Jenny Broderick that visitors staying at the site when it previously operated as a campground made a “valuable contribution to the local economy”.
“The exact start date (of the trial) has not yet been confirmed, with council still working through details including pricing, booking arrangements and management responsibilities,” they said.
Council said overnight stay fees were intended to be competitive with similar facilities in the area.
Access to the site will be controlled by a boom gate, with booking verification and monitoring processes in place to manage compliance, noise and waste.

Council has allocated funding to support the operation and management of the trial during the initial six-month period.
Findings from the trial, including site performance, usage levels and feedback, will help inform future decisions about the ongoing use of the site.
