Members of a school community have backed a call for more space after a state primary school began using its library as a classroom.

The campaign is being led by the P&C of Eudlo State School, where a Year 5 class has been using the school library since the beginning of the school year.

The school has 136 students enrolled, including 17 Year 5 students, according to Department of Education figures.

A petition calling for a new classroom has attracted 102 signatures.

A Department of Education spokesperson said the school was temporarily using the library as a shared learning space for some classes on a “rotating basis” because of “unexpected enrolment growth” in 2026.

“The department is working with the school to identify the most appropriate solution to accommodate the additional class,” the spokesperson said.

A School Enrolment Management Plan was gazetted on February 27 to help manage enrolments within the school’s capacity, the spokesperson added.

More than three-quarters of students attending the school live outside the catchment area, according to the department.

“With a School Enrolment Management Plan now in place, it is expected that enrolments will be able to be managed within capacity,” the spokesperson said.

P&C member Adelle, who has a child at the school and asked not to reveal her surname for privacy reasons, said the library was not intended to be a permanent classroom.

She said she would like to see a demountable classroom provided as a minimum.

“We just need more space,” she said.

Adelle described the library as “very small”, saying the shelves bordered the room and the students learned in the middle.

She said her concerns were about the learning environment and the school’s ability to cater for continued growth, rather than criticism of the school itself.

“The school does a wonderful job of accommodating every student that walks through those gates,” she said.

“We should be able to have enough buildings to the amount of students that we have at the school.”

Adelle said the school had grown substantially and she was concerned the issue could affect other year levels as students progressed through the school.

“We’re definitely not going to lose kids. We’re probably going to get more,” she said.

“We do need to be thinking towards the future.”

The department spokesperson said the school had not received complaints or negative feedback from the school community about the current library arrangement.

Parents with concerns are encouraged to contact the school principal or the department’s North Coast Regional Office, the spokesperson said.
