Several athletes with links to the Sunshine Coast are poised to compete at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
The University of the Sunshine Coast has announced that many competitors connected to the university were ready for action at Glasgow from July 23 to August 2.
“The Glasgow team builds on a remarkable history of sporting successes connected to UniSC, including standout results at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games,” the university stated.
Emily Beecroft, Isaac Cooper, Jenna Jones, Lakeisha Patterson and Alexandria Perkins will compete in swimming.
Courtney Bruce, Cara Koenen, Liz Watson and Donnell Wallam are in the Australian netball squad, with the latter a travelling reserve. Karin Burger will represent New Zealand in netball.
Peyton Craig and Nathan Jason will compete in athletics, while Hannah Dodd will compete in wheelchair basketball 3×3, plus Sophie Edwards will take part in cycling.
Meanwhile, Katelyn Inch will represent New Zealand in lawn bowls.
While some of those athletes are past and present students of UniSC, others are aligned via partnerships with the Queensland Academy of Sport, Sunshine Coast Lightning and the Australian Cycling Academy.
“As competition begins in Scotland this week, the UniSC community will be following the performances of its athletes and coaches, celebrating the impact they continue to make on the global sporting stage,” the university stated.
There are other athletes with links to the Sunshine Coast who will compete at Glasgow, including the likes of Kristina Clonan (cycling), Kelsey Cottrell (lawn bowls) and Lani Pallister (swimming), but swim star Kaylee McKeown announced she will not be there.
Glasgow rescued the 2026 Games at short notice after Victoria cancelled, meaning the opening ceremony on Friday morning will launch a streamlined event that will have fewer sports and participants.
