A vacant supermarket tenancy could soon have a new lease on life.

The former W’Gusto IGA at 1 The Basin, Pelican Waters, has been earmarked for a 24/7 Jetts gym, Pilates studio and O-Studio recovery centre under a new development application lodged with Sunshine Coast Council.

W’Gusto was the main tenant of the Dockside Village shopping complex and opened at the site in July 2024, offering gourmet products, fresh produce and an on-site cafe.

The supermarket closed suddenly in January 2025, initially telling customers it would reopen before later displaying a “closed until further notice” sign.

Sunshine Coast News reported in March 2025 that W’Gusto Supermarkets Pty Ltd had entered liquidation, less than 12 months after the store opened.

Now, plans have emerged for the existing tenancy to be repurposed as a combined health, fitness and recovery offering.

The application has been submitted by BeWell Brands, with Building Suncoast Green preparing the town planning report on behalf of the company.

BeWell Brands is a Bli Bli-headquartered franchise house “focused on building and scaling health, wellness and fitness brands, providing franchise partners with operational support and resources”.

The company has ties to both Jetts and O-Studio, with the proposal bringing the two brands together with Pilates at the Pelican Waters site.

The planned 782sqm Jetts gym would include fixed cardio equipment, pin-loaded strength machines and a free-weight area.

A 200sqm Pilates studio would provide reformer and mat Pilates, while a 307sqm O-Studio recovery centre would offer seated recovery, saunas and ice baths.

The three components are intended to complement one another and operate as a combined business rather than separate standalone uses.

The gym would operate around the clock, with one staff member, while the Pilates studio is proposed to open from 5.30am to 5pm on weekdays and 5.30am to 4pm on weekends.

The recovery centre would operate from 7am to 8pm seven days a week, with two staff members.

Pilates and recovery sessions would each be capped at 10 patrons at a time, while gym members would have key-card access outside staffed hours.

The proposal would make use of the existing building and would not involve changes to the approved car parking layout, site access or external works.

There are currently 40 car spaces, three motorcycle or scooter bays and 10 bicycle spaces at the site. The planning report acknowledges the proposed use has a higher parking rate under the relevant planning provisions than the previous shop use, but says a traffic assessment found the existing supply could accommodate demand from the proposal and other tenants.

Noise associated with the proposed 24-hour gym has also been addressed in the application.

The gym would operate indoors, with no outdoor training and only background-level music through ceiling speakers. The planning report refers to acoustic work undertaken for an earlier proposal for a 24-hour gym at the same building, which found predicted noise emissions, including activity associated with the car park, would remain within acceptable levels.

The application is subject to code assessment, with the planning report concluding the proposed use can achieve the relevant planning benchmarks.
