A petition opposing Sunshine Coast Council’s 9.7 per cent average rates increase has reached more than 3000 signatures amid ongoing community concerns.
The Change.org petition calling to keep fees within the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was created following the council’s decision at a special budget meeting on June 1.
The increase includes general rates and other council charges, including dog registration fees for desexed, microchipped pets, which are set to rise from $30 to $63 per year.
A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said, “At this point in time the petition has not been lodged with council, therefore it is not being currently considered”.
Petition organiser John Mugliett said he launched the petition after years of rising financial pressure on households.
“I’ve lived on the Sunshine Coast all my life and have been a dedicated ratepayer and pet owner for many years,” Mr Mugliett said.
“In recent years, I’ve watched in dismay as our local council’s fees have skyrocketed beyond reasonable expectation, straining the financial stability of many individuals and families within our community.
“Our community is built on principles of fairness and economic equity, yet we find ourselves burdened with fees increasing at a rate disproportionate to the CPI.
“The Sunshine Coast is a region blessed with natural beauty and a strong sense of community. However, these increases threaten our way of life and make it harder for families to make ends meet.”

Others who signed the petition raised concerns about cost-of-living pressures and compared the increase with neighbouring councils.
Peregian Beach resident Charlie said the budget was unacceptable.
“Telling families, renters, pensioners, small businesses and young people to pay more when many are already at breaking point,” he said.
“Rates don’t just hit homeowners – they flow through to rent, prices and the cost of living…”
Another signatory, Vivian, questioned how the increase compared with other councils.
“Why is Sunshine Coast Regional Council (SCRC) so high, at 9.70 (per cent) when Gold Coast is only 4.70, Moreton Bay only 4.69, and Brisbane just 3.97?” she said.
