A 30-year-old Sunshine Coast man has been charged following an investigation into the alleged grievous bodily harm of a nine-week-old child at Currimundi in April.

Police allege the baby boy was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital about 11pm on April 24 and admitted to the intensive care unit with life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from the Sunshine Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit and the Child Trauma Unit launched an investigation to determine how the child was injured.

According to police, investigators conducted extensive enquiries over a six-week period, examining the timeframe from the child’s birth until he was presented at hospital.

Police will allege the infant suffered several serious injuries, including extensive brain and optical trauma, as well as multiple fractures.

As a result of those investigations, detectives arrested a man at Warana on Saturday afternoon. Police said the man was known to the child.

The 30-year-old Currimundi man has been charged with one count of grievous bodily harm (domestic violence offence against a child).

He was refused police bail and is due to appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on Monday.

The charge comes after police issued a public appeal earlier this month seeking information as detectives worked to establish how the baby sustained the alleged injuries.
