New research has revealed the Sunshine Coast is Australia’s most energy-efficient region, thanks to strong solar uptake and modern housing.
A report by comparison experts iSelect shows the area accumulated a score of 86.01 out of 100, ahead of Boddington in Western Australia (82.71).
The study analysed solar adoption, climate demand and urban density across every major LGA in Australia to highlight where households are best positioned to reduce energy and costs.
“The Sunshine Coast delivers consistently strong performance across all factors analysed, with a 66.3 per cent solar panel density, a healthy tree canopy coverage at 55.4 per cent, and relatively low climate demand,” iSelect stated.
“The region stands out not by dominating any single category, but by delivering consistently strong performance across all of them.”
The area scored 59.85 in renewable energy adoption, 74.90 in urban form and density, 62.35 in residential construction efficiency, 69.25 in environmental efficiency, and 80.57 in climate adjustment, but a relatively low 27.09 in legacy housing stock.

Queensland areas Gympie, Fraser Coast, Moreton Bay and Bundaberg are also within the nation’s top 10.
“Findings suggest that Queensland’s combination of climate conditions, renewable uptake, and newer housing developments positions the state as a national leader in residential energy efficiency,” iSelect stated.
The least energy-efficient homes in Australia are in the MacDonnell area in rural Northern Territory.
Every central capital city LGA ranks outside the top 40 most energy-efficient places to live.
