A prominent Mexican fast-food chain has opened a venue within one of the Sunshine Coast’s fastest-growing areas.

Guzman y Gomez launched its drive-thru restaurant at Baringa on Wednesday.

It is GYG’s sixth eatery in the region, alongside stores at Maroochydore, Buddina, Birtinya, Caloundra and recently opened Glass House Mountains. There are also plans for one at Sippy Downs.

The Baringa restaurant is led by Brooke and Steve Gren, who have called the Sunshine Coast home for more than 40 years. They joined GYG at the end of 2022 and took over the Caloundra outlet in early 2025.  Their eldest daughter, Billi, will be the assistant restaurant manager.

“Opening GYG Baringa is a huge moment for our family,” Brooke and Steve said in a GYG press release.

“We’ve been part of this community our whole lives and to now be opening a restaurant right in the heart of the community – a place that’s growing so fast and is full of young families just like ours – feels very special.

GYG Baringa, at 2 Symonds Way, will create about 80 local jobs.

“The response from locals has been incredible,” they said.

“Over 300 people put their hand up to work here, many of them young people who live right around the corner.

“We can’t wait to be a part of this neighbourhood for years to come”.

Billi said she was excited to be involved.

“I’m proud to say my parents own GYG,” she said.

“It’s fresh, it’s good food, and it’s a brand you genuinely want to be part of.”
