A spate of number plate thefts across the Sunshine Coast has police urging locals to take preventative measures.
More than 25 thefts were reported in just over two weeks in April, prompting authorities to issue a media release encouraging community members to install anti-theft screws.
“While a number of factors contribute to this trend, rising fuel costs may be placing additional financial pressure on some individuals, which can lead to an increase in opportunistic offences,” police stated.
“Stolen number plates are often used to avoid identification in crimes such as fuel drive-offs, toll evasions and other property-related offences.”
Police offered tips to protect vehicles including: using anti-theft (one-way) screws on plates; parking in a locked garage where possible; and avoiding leaving vehicles unsecured on the street overnight.

Anti-theft one-way screws are readily available from selected hardware stores and automotive retailers. They are designed to fit all vehicle types, can be installed using a standard flat-head screwdriver, and are difficult to remove without specialised tools.
Assistance with removing or replacing number plates can be sought at police stations or the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
