Police are increasing high-visibility patrols and weapon detection efforts to tackle youth antisocial behaviour in two neighbouring areas of the Sunshine Coast.

Officers have been monitoring shopping precincts, parks and other places where young people congregate, at Coolum Beach and Peregian Springs.

As part of these patrols, they have been conducting wanding under Jack’s Law, using a small handheld metal detector to scan a person for knives and other weapons.

Coolum Police Station acting officer in charge Senior Sergeant Joel Bryant said most of the interactions have been positive, and reminded parents of their responsibilities.

“It is important that we surround young people with the necessary support to direct them away from the criminal justice system and enable them to positively thrive in our community,” he said.

“Community safety starts in the home, and we encourage parents to join with us by setting clear behavioural expectations with their children to keep them, and our community safe.

“We’re asking parents to work with police in preventing and disrupting any possible anti-social behaviour or offending and to be aware of your child’s whereabouts, who they are with, and what activities they are undertaking.”

Police will continue to remain highly visible in the lead up to and during the  school holidays across the Sunshine Coast

“You can expect to see police anywhere and at any time, working together with the community to ensure everyone stays safe,” police stated in a daily roundup.
