A local council is calling on the community for help after a significant illegal dumping incident was discovered.

A large volume of waste was left by the roadside near the intersection of the Old Bruce Highway and Kenilworth Skyring Creek Road at Tuchekoi, west of Pomona.

Gympie Regional Council said that due to the quantity and contents of the materials, it believed the load was illegally dumped by a business or contractor.

Illegal dumping is a growing issue in the Gympie region, with 75 complaints to the council and more than 78,000 litres of illegal waste recorded so far this year.

The council said it had a zero-tolerance stance on illegal dumping in the region, and that incorrect disposal of waste and hazardous materials impacted the natural beauty of the region and posed significant threats to the health and wellbeing of the community, environment and wildlife.

Councillor Gordon Maudsley reminded residents of their options for waste disposal and the financial implications illegal dumping has on ratepayers.

It is believed the waste was dumped by a business or contractor.

“We’re proud of our community and want to ensure it is safe and clean, which is why we take illegal dumping very seriously,” he said.

“Individuals and businesses caught dumping need to be held accountable and we’re encouraging the community to report these instances to council for investigation.

“With the $15 million allocated each year, waste disposal is a huge cost to council and it’s not fair for average ratepayers to have to pick up the costs for those who choose to do the wrong thing.”

The council welcomes any information that can assist in holding those responsible for the illegal dumping accountable. Photo or video evidence can be uploaded here, or email compliance@gympie.qld.gov.au or phone 1300 307 800.

When recording evidence, it’s important to note the vehicle registration of vehicles involved, along with any information regarding the driver.
