A new beachside apartment building that stalled twice after builders struck financial difficulty is nearing completion.

The scaffolding came down last month at The Curl, a striking wave-inspired complex of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments on Barrel Street, Bokarina Beach.

Landscaping and finishing touches are now underway and completion is expected by the middle of this year.

There was talk of the complex being cursed after not just one but two builders collapsed while working on the project.

The first builder, BA Murphy, went down in 2021 owing $11 million to customers and suppliers nationally.

Award-winning construction firm PBS Building took over the job but the site fell silent in March 2023 when it went into administration, leaving neighbours and stakeholders gob-smacked.

Australia’s largest privately owned construction company, Hutchinson Builders, came to the rescue in late 2023 and has got the job done.

A building format plan, one of the final formalities as far as the council approval process goes for multiple-dwelling developments, has been submitted to the council for approval for The Curl.

Hutchies did not offer comment on the project, instead referring inquiries to Bokarina Beach developer Stockland.

Builder PBS was the second building company to fail while The Curl was being built.

Stockland’s reply was brief and did not tarry on The Curl’s troubled past.

“Bokarina Beach is a vibrant and connected community that celebrates the quintessential Sunshine Coast lifestyle with shops, schools and dining, all within easy reach for our residents at The Curl,” a spokesperson said.

“Once complete, The Curl at Bokarina Beach will comprise 30 dwellings with a mix of quality one-, two- and three-bedroom townhomes and apartments.

“We look forward to welcoming our residents to their new homes in the next few months.”
