Holidaymakers and longer-term residents were evacuated when fire broke out in a caravan park this afternoon, destroying at least one van.

A Queensland Fire Department spokeswoman said a tree close to caravans at the Dicky Beach Holiday Park was reported on fire about 2.05pm but had spread by the time crews arrived.

“When they arrived, there was one caravan that was fully engulfed and they’re working to put it out and protect remaining caravans,” she said at 2.30pm.

The fire spread to a second caravan before firefighters were able to bring it under control.

The spokeswoman said occupants of the caravan park had been evacuated and police and ambulance were also in attendance.

Firefighters were still at the park at 3.15pm dampening down the scene.
