A Sunshine Coast town’s main street has a new look.

Landsborough’s Cribb Street has been revitalised by a streetscape project that included introducing a range of features into the business area.

Sunshine Coast Council completed the first stage of the project in 2021 and now the second and final stage is finished.

Councillor Jenny Broderick was delighted with the outcome.

“The council team has worked with the Landsborough community over several years to develop the design for Cribb Street, to beautify and improve the town’s strong community heart,” she said.

“The revitalised streetscape creates a stronger, more functional destination and beautiful town heart for locals to gather, and for visitors to experience our country charm.”

Features of the new space include shelters and seating, a play space, lawn area for community events, more shade trees and creative lighting elements to build on the signature night-time lighting of the township.

Council has also installed an expanded heritage trail, developed with the community.

“There are so many things that make Landsborough a special country town, steeped in heritage mixed with modern community spaces,” Cr Broderick said.

“It’s a town that grows richer with age and is an excellent place to visit, learn about local history and enjoy the cafes, historic pub, museum and shopping.

Geometric pods provide shade and feature lighting.

“The consultants worked with an artist to develop the special geometric pods suspended within the arbour, providing shade during the day and feature lighting in the evening.

“The pods reference our region’s bunya nut trees, which were once plentiful in the area, providing food sources and a natural resource to support First Nations gatherings, trade and ceremony.”

The first European settlement was established in Landsborough in 1871. It was named after explorer William Landsborough and is situated just off Steve Irwin Way. It was the centre of the former Landsborough shire and was an important hub for the timber industry.

The community has been invited to a free community event to celebrate the transformed Cribb Street and Park, at Railways RSL Park, on Saturday, November 23, from 4pm to 6pm.

There will be a free sausage sizzle, hosted by the Glasshouse Country Rotary Club, live music, and a new playground for kids.

“It’s going to be a great afternoon celebrating together, so bring a picnic rug, sit in the park and enjoy local live music and of course the kids will love the new playground,” Cr Broderick said.

The project is part of the multi-stage Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan, endorsed by Council in January 2020.

This project was funded by the Queensland Government’s South-East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in association with Sunshine Coast Council.

About $200,000 was contributed through the Infrastructure Agreement for the Caloundra South development (Aura) to support the development of community infrastructure that will provide benefit to the communities surrounding the Caloundra South development (Aura).
