A new name could soon be added to the Sunshine Coast map as consultation opens on a proposed boundary change within one of Australia’s largest masterplanned communities.

The Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines, Manufacturing and Regional and Rural Development has opened community consultation on a proposal to amend the locality boundary of Bells Creek and create a new area called Aura Central.

The proposal would move around 90 hectares of land from Bells Creek into the new locality within the Caloundra South Priority Development Area, commonly known as Aura.

The department said the change was about more than a name, with accurate addressing helping key services including police, ambulance, postal and emergency operations work effectively.

If approved, affected residents and businesses would need to update their address details to reflect the boundary change, while property owners and residents would also be notified directly by letter.

According to consultation documents, the proposed change would formally recognise the CBD at the centre of the development.

The broader Caloundra South project was declared a Priority Development Area in 2010. When complete, the development is expected to deliver about 20,000 homes for around 50,000 residents across a city-sized community.

The proposed locality covers the wider city-centre area, including projects such as Aura Town Centre and Aura Parklands.

Spanning about 16,300sqm, the first stage of Aura Town Centre will feature Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets alongside two mini-majors and about 55 specialty retailers and kiosks.

The centre has been designed to connect with the 5.3-hectare Aura Parklands development and future Aura Hotel operated by the Comiskey Group, with the wider city-centre plans also including retail and commercial space, civic and education facilities and major public areas.

The masterplanned community already includes localities such as Banya, Gagalba and Nirimba, with the latest proposal intended to recognise the CBD area within the broader development.

Community consultation for the name change is open until June 26.

Submissions will be considered by the Minister for Natural Resources and Mines, Minister for Manufacturing and Minister for Regional and Rural Development before a final decision is made.
