Two Sunshine Coast women have been recognised for their talent and contributions to the building industry.

Courtney Burns and Justine Hamilton Ball were winners in the 10th annual HIA Women in Building awards.

Ms Burns, the business development manager for Mooloolaba-based Azura Building Group, was awarded the Professional Service Excellence title, while Ms Hamilton Ball, an electrical apprentice with East Coast Apprentices, was awarded Tradeswoman of the Year.

HIA Sunshine Coast branch manager Will Wilson said construction on the Sunshine Coast was growing in diversity.

“Having two of eight state winners from the Coast highlights the exceptional talent of the local construction industry,” he said.

HIA executive director Queensland Mike Roberts said the industry had always relied upon smart, hardworking women to ensure more people in the state could get a roof over their heads.

“Without the contribution of skilled and dedicated women, the home-building industry simply does not function, and our winners this year clearly demonstrate the high value that women are bringing to the table when it comes to getting on with the work of building more homes to tackle the current housing crisis,” he said.

Courtney Burns been recognised with the HIA’s Professional Service Excellence award.

Ms Burns was praised in the awards announcement for her excellent vision and leadership.

“Her dedication to fostering a positive work culture and her commitment to professional development significantly enhance team performance and business success,” it said.

“Known for her effective communication and mentorship, Courtney’s influence extends beyond her role, driving industry excellence and team cohesion.

“Her proactive approach and balanced leadership make her a standout professional in the building industry.”

Ms Hamilton Ball was described as a remarkable example of dedication as an apprentice.

“Her proactive mindset is evident in her work, where she introduced a new wiring technique that streamlined installations and reduced time on-site,” it said.

“Her active role in promoting women in trades includes leading workshops that showcase the contributions of women in electrical work.

“Recognised with multiple awards this year, her dedication is further highlighted by her willingness to travel long distances and work extended hours to master her craft and contribute to her field.”
