A man has been taken to hospital and a dog is dead after a fire in a duplex at Cooroora Street, Dicky Beach.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services received a call just before 12.40pm today from a person who said a fire alarm was sounding and smoke was coming from a building.

Incident controller Stephen Ossedryver said the duplex at the front of the property was well involved when firefighters arrived.

“We could see smoke in the air from probably about half a kilometre away and there were large plumes of black smoke drifting across the road and flames were in evidence down the left-hand side of the house,” he said.

“We went down with a hose but then we relocated to the right-hand side because that was where the fire was likely to spread with the way the wind was blowing.”

Two fire crews from Caloundra, and one from each of Kawana and Maroochydore stations, attended the blaze, which Mr Ossedryver said took about 30 minutes to bring under control.

He said the Queensland Housing property was gutted and the roof collapsed but firefighters stopped the fire from spreading to the duplex behind.

A Queensland Ambulance spokesperson said a male of unknown age with facial burns was assessed at the scene.  He was later taken to hospital.

Mr Ossedryver said a dog perished in the fire.

“I’ve been doing this a long time and animals get scared, they can run in, they can run out, they hide,” he said.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established and fire investigators are due to attend tomorrow.
