A Sunshine Coast town dubbed the “playground by the sea” is in contention for a major tourism award and locals have been encouraged to get behind it.

Caloundra was revealed as one of seven finalists to be crowned Queensland’s Top Tourism Town, after an extensive application and judging process.

Locals, holidaymakers and weekend warriors have the opportunity to choose which destination will get the accolade, via a two-week voting window that will close on May 24.

Caloundra’s key attractions include the natural wonders of the Pumicestone Passage and nearby Glass House Mountains, local eateries such as White Picket Fence and action-packed activities including Oceanview Helicopters.

There is also the Caloundra Markets and Mural Trail to Kings Beach and the Queensland Air Museum.

Caloundra Chamber CEO Brady Sullivan said Caloundra had been a loved holiday destination for generations.

He called on Sunshine Coasters to vote for the “playground by the sea”.

“If Caloundra was to be named Queensland’s Top Tourism Town it would be a huge drawcard, not only for the destination but for the Sunshine Coast tourism industry,” he said via a press release.

“The award would represent the feeling of the generations that have been coming here for years and showcase all Caloundra has to offer.”

A perfect place for watersports.

Mr Sullivan said Caloundra was a unique holiday destination.

“Caloundra has a plethora of attractions and can be a relaxed holiday by the water or a fun-filled family holiday,” he said.

“Help us make Caloundra Queensland’s Top Tourism Town by voting for Caloundra today. You will also go in the draw to win a five-star holiday provided by the Queensland Tourism Industry Council.”

Presented by the state’s peak body for tourism, Queensland Tourism Industry Council, the annual awards recognise outstanding regional destinations, honouring communities that demonstrate a commitment to visitor excellence.

QTIC CEO Brett Fraser said the public would help decide the winners.

“Each finalist is a local treasure,” he said.

“From coastal escapes in Caloundra and Airlie Beach, to outback adventures in Quilpie and Julia Creek, these communities showcase the very best that Queensland has to offer visitors,” he said.

“It is not only homegrown attractions that drive guests to a destination. It is a combined effort from local communities and tourism operators that help holidaymakers feel welcome. The awards shine a light on these communities and celebrate their dedication to visitor excellence.

“Congratulations to all the remarkable finalists, who have demonstrated that you do not need to travel far in Queensland to enjoy an incredible experience.”

There are some great cafes and restaurants in the area.

Tourism Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said Queenslanders continued to lead the discovery of world-class visitor experiences.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Queenslanders to reward their favourite regional Tourism Towns for unforgettable visitor experiences,” he said via a QTIC media release.

“From tourism and accommodation operators to cafes, restaurants and the local supermarket, being a Top Tourism Town is all about a united community commitment to excellence.”

State winners will go on to represent Queensland at the national awards held later in the year. Where they have the chance to be crowned one of Australia’s Top Tourism Towns.
