Sunshine Coast-based not-for-profit organisation Arts Connect Inc is holding its annual Open Studios event across the Coast and hinterland across two weekends from May 20.

Featuring more than 70 artists, the free family-friendly event showcases the work of both established and emerging local artists from a variety of creative backgrounds including ceramicists, woodworkers, painters and glass artisans.

Open Studios Sunshine Coast is an initiative established by Arts Connect Inc with the aim to connect local artists with their community.

Arts Connect Inc president Evelyn Joy said the event was a perfect opportunity for locals and the broader community to experience the work of some incredible Sunshine Coast artists.

“We are thrilled to highlight the abundant artistic talent that resides within the Sunshine Coast region,” she said.

“Our Open Studio events are about building a deeper connection with our local artists so we can expose them and their work to the broadest possible community.

David Bongiorno.

“The event caters to a range of different interests. Our self-guided tours take you into the world of the artist where you can see how they go about their work and there’s also the option to participate in various creative workshops run by the artist themselves.

“Much of the artwork is for sale and we encourage visitors to consider buying a piece of art to support local artists. Many of these artists have endured struggles during and after Covid so they will certainly appreciate the exposure.”

Ms Joy said Arts Connect was planning to introduce new technology features to enhance the tour experience for participants.

Nicky Carey.

“As we go into this year’s event, we want to continue to evolve and create an engaging experience,” she said.

“This year we are introducing a YouTube series that includes interviews with 10 local artists to give attendees an inside look into the artists’ world from the comfort of their own home.

“In addition to this, we are launching an Arts Connect app, which will guide the event attendees through the Art Trail to the artists’ studio seamlessly, meaning there’s more time to appreciate the art.”

The opening weekend kicks off with a launch event at local distillery Sunshine and Sons in Woombye.
