The sudden addition of an NBL grand final player has provided Sunshine Coast Phoenix with a lift, in their pursuit of a playoffs berth.
Versatile forward Jarred Bairstow played for the Perth Wildcards in the National Basketball League grand final series in Melbourne on June 25, before suiting up for the Phoenix in the NBL1 North at Maroochydore less than 24 hours.
“When the opportunity presented itself, we were able to get all the paperwork through and he made his way to the game on Saturday,” Sunshine Coast coach Dale Ryan said.
“It was a fair effort from him, especially considering what he has done with the Wildcats this year.”
Bairstow played a significant role for the Wildcats and enjoyed a breakthrough season, before they were swept by Melbourne United in the final series.
Now, he’s set to bolster the Phoenix in their quest for a spot in the eight-team playoffs.
In his first appearance for them, he played 33 minutes and notched 13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists, although they lost 102-93 to second-placed Mackay.
“We’re really happy to have him as part of our group,” Ryan said.
“He contributed in his first game for us and he’s going to help improve the team as he fits in.
“I think he’s already had an impact on the group, being that voice on the floor and bringing plenty of experience. He’s played on the US college system, with successful teams in the QBL (Queensland Basketball League) and has spent time with the Wildcats and Bullets at NBL level.

Ryan previously worked with Bairstow at the Brisbane Capitals in the QBL and has followed his career. He knows what to expect from the 201cm, 104kg powerhouse.
“He can be a leader, a coach and a great presence on the floor for us.
“He can defend in multiple positions and he does all the little things, being in the right position and moving other players into position.
“Offensively, he can play inside and outside (the key).”

The Phoenix are sixth on a 14-team ladder after winning four of eight games, in a 12-game regular season.
They lost some close games at the start of the season.
“The opportunity to win presented itself in three games that we lost … and it might come back to haunt us at the end of the season,” Ryan said.
“There are one or two teams that have set themselves apart but then there are eight or nine teams vying for those final six spots in the playoffs.

“We’re well in the mix but the key is to jell quickly.
“Our depth and variety and experience should hold us in good stead, and I look forward to the challenges ahead.”
The Phoenix men and women are scheduled to clash with the Brisbane-based Spartans at USC Stadium on July 4, while the Sunshine Coast-based USC Rip City are scheduled to meet Northside in north Brisbane on July 3.
But all NBL1 North clubs have an eye on COVID-19 advice, after several parts of Queensland, including the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, went into a three-day lockdown from Tuesday night.
