The Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival has been recognised as one of Australia’s premier athletics events, in the countdown to the region hosting the Olympic marathon in 2032.

It was awarded World Athletics Label status for road races, after experiencing rapid growth since its inception in 2012.

The Sunshine Coast joined Sydney and the Gold Coast as the only Australian locations to receive the accolade.

The festival, organised by Atlas Events, includes a marathon (42.2km), the Australian Half Marathon Championships (21.1km) and other distances.

It’s renowned for its scenery, temperate August running conditions and a relatively flat, fast course.

The Sunshine Coast is poised to host the Olympic marathon in 2032.

It’s also set to host other road events, including walking and cycling, at the Games.

The Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival is based at Alexandra Headland.

Event director Jason Crowther said Atlas Events was “incredibly proud” of  the festival’s new status.

“Our event has seen remarkable growth over the years and we are committed to providing an exceptional experience for every participant, whether they are chasing a personal best or simply enjoying the camaraderie of fellow runners,” he said.

“The combination of our fast and scenic course, world-class organisation and the opportunity to compete in the Australian championships makes the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival an event not to be missed for any runner.”

Sunshine Coast Council Economy Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said it was “marvellous” to see the Sunshine Coast event was now on the same list as major events in Madrid, Singapore, Boston, Dublin, London and Tokyo.

This year’s festival is set to be held on August 12 and 13. Runners of all levels and abilities can join the festival.
