Visitors to Australia’s biggest beer festival are in for a creation with a surprise twist, thanks to a Sunshine Coast brewery.

Best known for its pale ales, this year Moffat Beach Brewing Co will redefine the pilsner with its new beetroot-inspired beverage.

General manager Craig Williams said the brew, cheekily named the Can’t Beet A Root Pilsner, would debut at the Great Australasian Beer Spectacular, which visits Brisbane on June 10.

“While enjoying a beer and a burger with the lot down at Moffat Beach, head brewer Matt Wilson pondered the deep red beetroot stain currently spreading all over his trusty board shorts,” Mr Williams said.

“As a heady aroma of grilled meat, bacon and pineapple wafted on the sea breeze, an idea began to form between Matt’s slightly sunburnt ears: what if we could capture that truly magical vegetable – the beetroot – in a beer?”

The result, Mr Williams said, would be a quintessentially Australian flavour.

“We’re expecting a bright and refreshing lager, clean and crisp with an earthy undertone. Oh, and it should be pink – fun!” he said.

Moffat Beach Brewing Co founders Matt and Sharynne Wilson came to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney in 2012. In search of better beer options, Matt began brewing his own and in 2015 the brewery was born.

“Our beers are inspired by the people and places of the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Williams said.

“In everything we brew, quality is of the utmost importance. We want to ensure that every beer we serve gives you a taste of the remarkable lifestyle we enjoy here in our little slice of paradise.

“We’ve been involved with GABS over the past few years, brewing festival beers and sometimes exhibiting at the events.

“It’s a great opportunity to connect with beer lovers in different regions.

“For us, events like GABS are great opportunities to get together with peers from across the country, share a yarn and a beer, and catch up.

“The festival beers also offer brewers a unique opportunity to push the boat out with highly creative recipes, and it’s always fun to see what everyone comes up with.”

Moffat Beach Brewing Co will again be involved in the GABS festival.

Other unusual brews at GABS this year include a Raspberry Coconut Sour, Drinkin’ Donuts Imperial Jam Donut Golden Ale, Red Frogs and Raspberry Dark Lager, Bananarama Pina Colada Sour and Sticke Coffee Kolsch.

GABS also visits Melbourne in May and Sydney in June, all up attracting 40,000 people each year.

In addition to Australia’s craft beer stars and start-up breweries, this year’s GABS welcomes California’s Sierra Nevada, the USA’s first billion-dollar independent brewery, and Cloudwater from Manchester in the UK.
