An Australian-first bowling venue based on the Sunshine Coast has struck a new partnership that will see it generate almost 50 per cent of its power needs.

Tenpin Bowling Australia (TBA) has been bringing a range of world class events to its High Performance and Community Centre since it took over an iconic Coast bowling alley.

The centre is located at the reinvigorated Suncity Tenpin, which has been part of the Alexandra Headland landscape since 1979.

As part of a ground-breaking partnership between TBA and energy company AGL, the centre has been officially named the AGL National High Performance Centre.

It will see AGL install a 99.8kW solar system made up of 217 solar panels on the roof of the centre to help harness the power of the sun to provide renewable energy to the centre.

The solar system will meet 44 per cent of the centre’s overall energy demands and allow some renewable energy to be exported back into the grid.

AGL general manager of commercial and industrial customers, Ryan Warburton, said the new partnership brought value to both organisations.

“We’re proud to be partnering with Tenpin Bowling Australia to help the organisation realise its renewable energy potential,” Mr Warburton said.

“This is a unique partnership that provides the potential for AGL to support Australia’s future tenpin bowling athletes through renewable energy and sponsorship.”

TBA chief executive officer Rohan O’Neill said the organisation was thrilled to partner with AGL.

“We are delighted to welcome AGL to the tenpin bowling community,” Mr O’Neill said.

“Harnessing solar energy to help power the AGL High Performance Centre is a major step forward into ensuring the sport prepares for the future.

“With our Olympic ambitions clear, this partnership enables the sport to invest more in developing our talented athletes whilst also doing our bit for the planet.”

As part of the partnership, AGL will be working closely with TBA to enable further energy savings for other tenpin bowling centres across the country.

This announcement comes as the centre recently hosted the International Bowling Federation Para World Cup in early November, with the World Cup now underway until November 23.

The centre also hosted the Tenpin Premier League Suncity Showdown and provides a space for more than 400 league bowlers each.

Suncity Tenpin is located at 8 Mari St, Alexandra Headland and open daily. Bookings are recommended.
