One of Noosa’s busiest roads is expected to be less clogged after a new roundabout was opened.
The long-awaited roundabout at the intersection of Cooroy-Noosa Road and Beckmans Road opened to one lane of traffic, helping to improve the ‘accident hotspot’.
MP Member for Noosa Sandy Bolton said she was thrilled the first stage was nearing completion.
“As everyone is aware through the years of advocacy, this intersection was a well-documented accident hotspot,” Ms Bolton said.
Noosa Council Mayor Clare Stewart said moving traffic onto the roundabout made room for the rest of works to be completed.
“Work will now focus on the northern side of Cooroy-Noosa Road and converting the old section of Beckmans Road into a service road access for nearby residents,” Cr Stewart said.
The new addition adds to the maze of roundabouts already in the Noosa Shire which visitors often find difficult to navigate, especially with poor signage on roadworks.
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the milestone was an important step to transforming one of the region’s busiest local roads, as the final stages of construction on Stage 1 of the Tewantin Bypass started.
“The new roundabout has slowly taken shape next to the existing intersection as the project team managed challenging conditions,” Mr Bailey said.
“When complete, the full two lanes will be open to traffic.
“Not only is this project improving safety and efficiency on the road, it will also help to get Queenslanders home safer and sooner by reducing congestion.”
All works are weather and construction conditions permitting.
Noosa Council is delivering Stage 1 of the Tewantin Bypass with Transport and Main Roads as part of the $400 million road stimulus package funded by the Queensland Government. $9.81 million has been allocated to upgrade the intersection.
