One of the Sunshine Coast’s main waste facilities is receiving a range of improvements.

The Caloundra Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre at 171 Pierce Avenue at Corbould Park is undergoing an upgrade after Sunshine Coast Council committed $5.75 million towards it in the 2026-2027 budget.

A Sunshine Coast Council representative said works were well underway.

“All identified projects are on schedule and in various stages of delivery, planning, design, or construction,” they said.

“Each project is developed through careful planning and design to provide value and meet a need in the delivery of council’s waste management operations.

“All projects are fully funded by Sunshine Coast Council and received suitable funding to allow for the successful delivery of each project, with some projects spanning multiple financial years.”

Among the initiatives is a multimillion-dollar investment in the centre’s hardstand areas, where gravel yards used to store and manage bulk waste and recovered materials will be reshaped and resurfaced.

Other works include planning for an onsite system to treat landfill leachate – liquid collected from the landfill – before it is discharged to sewer under an agreement with Unitywater.

Internal roads will also be resealed, while an older unsealed perimeter road will receive additional gravel.

The council is upgrading parts of the existing leachate collection system, including a pump station, and plans to extend the system as the landfill expands. Existing infrastructure will also be assessed and upgraded where required.

Ageing sections of decking and roofing at an administration building are due to be replaced, while a new master plan will examine how the resource recovery centre could be reconfigured to meet growing demand for waste services.

The representative said the works formed part of a wider allocation for waste sites across the region.

“The capital budget allocated $27 million for a range of waste projects that support Council’s delivery of waste management services to the community, from the provision of new assets and the renewal of older ones.”
