A new advisory body will be formed to help balance tourism, community wellbeing and environmental protection at one of Queensland’s best-known holiday destinations.

Noosa Council has endorsed a draft Terms of Reference and given a green light to recruit members for Noosa’s first Destination Stewardship Council.

The new body will bring together representatives from government, tourism, business, community and other stakeholder organisations to help deliver priority actions in the Noosa Destination Management Plan.

Council endorsed the Destination Management Plan in December to better balance community wellbeing and environmental protection with a strong and well managed visitor economy.

Mayor Frank Wilkie said the DSC would help coordinate action across key organisations and sectors closely involved in managing Noosa as a destination.

“Noosa’s lifestyle, environment and economy are closely connected, so it’s important we work together to manage the opportunities and challenges that come with being a popular destination,” he said.

“The Destination Stewardship Council will bring together key stakeholders to track progress and support those priority projects that the community told us were important. This body will help turn the Destination Management Plan into action.”

The Draft Terms of Reference adopted by Noosa Council ensure the Destination Stewardship Council can provide informed, evidence-based advice while recognising Noosa Council’s local statutory decision-making authority remains.

Council developed the draft Terms of Reference based on best practice examples from other highly regarded global destinations, in the US, Canada and Italy.

The endorsement allows council to begin recruiting members for an inaugural Destination Stewardship Council. The Destination Stewardship Council will include an independent chairperson.
