A Sunshine Coast man was among motorists hit with hefty fines after being recorded at excessive speeds during the school holidays.

A black BYD Seal was intercepted by police on Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum after it was detected at 160km/h in a 100km/h zone, on September 24, just before 10pm.

A 20-year-old Maleny man was issued $2296 in fines and 11 demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h and failing to keep left of double continuous dividing lines.

“I’m just late for work. I know I shouldn’t be speeding,” he told police after being pulled over.

The officer responded: “Do you want to get to work?”

He was one of many motorists detected speeding by highway patrol officers as part of Operation Spring Break during the school holidays.

Police also observed a black Holden Commodore driving at excessive speed on Beerburrum Road on October 4, at about 7.30am.

The vehicle was detected travelling at 126km/h in a signed 60km/h zone.

A 44-year-old Caboolture man was fined $1986 and 8 demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/h. His license was also suspended for six months.

Police intercepted a white Nissan Pathfinder that was detected travelling 156km/h in a 110km/h zone on the Bruce Highway at Caboolture on September 25, just after 11.50pm.

A 21-year-old Chermside man was charged with driving a motor vehicle without a licence and driving a motor vehicle whilst over the middle alcohol limit but not the high alcohol limit. He was due to face Caboolture Magistrates Court on October 19.

He was also fined $1986 and 8 demerit points for exceeding the speed limit by more than 40km/hr.

Operation Spring Break was conducted from September to October 5 to target dangerous driving during the school holidays.

A total of 1319 traffic infringement notices were issued for speeding offences across the North Coast Region, which includes the Sunshine Coast, Moreton region and Wide Bay-Burnett, during the operation.

Officer in Charge of Moreton North Highway Patrol senior sergeant Malcolm Lilley said there was no excuse for this type of behaviour on our roads.

“It’s disappointing to see three drivers nabbed travelling more than 40km over the speed limit in such a short time frame, let alone during the last week of the school holidays when we see increased traffic on our roads,” he said.

“Excessive speeds will not be tolerated, and drivers should expect to see police anywhere, anytime enforcing speed limits.”
