An upgrade to improve safety and traffic management is underway on a school bus zone.
Work has started on an overhaul of the Maroochydore State High bus area, after extensive advocating from the school community and local MP Fiona Simpson.
Ms Simpson on Friday celebrated the beginning of the $2m project, which will be delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and is funded by the state government.
“I have advocated and supported this upgrade due to the significant safety issues. I’m pleased this funding will deliver a safe new bus set-down, which will make a great difference,” she said.
“No longer will buses have to reverse park with teachers acting as traffic controllers to keep students safe. When the work is completed, buses will be able to parallel park and not reverse.
“I thank the school community and travelling public for their patience during construction: the finished results will be worth it. It’s really exciting to see the works commencing.”
Maroochydore High principal David Samaha said the upgrade would make a significant difference.
“This project will deliver lasting improvements to safety, traffic management and access for all members of our school community,” he said.
The project also includes all-weather bus shelters, and improvements to the ramp into the carpark and other pedestrian walkways.
