A Sunshine Coast family seafood business has taken a major step onto the national retail stage, with its locally caught product now available to shoppers across Australia.

Walker’s Tuna, produced by Mooloolaba-based Walker Seafoods Australia, began rolling out to Coles supermarkets nationally on August 9.

The deal comes two years after the family-owned company launched the Walker’s Tuna retail brand in August 2024, following more than two decades supplying Australian tuna to restaurants and international markets.

Walker Seafoods managing director Heidi Walker said securing space in the supermarket tuna aisle was a major step for the business and Australian seafood producers.

“It means shoppers now have a genuine Australian option in a category that has traditionally been dominated by imported products,” she said.

“Australia produces some of the best tuna in the world, yet Australian families have had limited access to it where they do their weekly grocery shop.”

Walker Seafoods has operated from Mooloolaba since 2002.

The Walker’s Tuna range uses Australian albacore tuna caught in the Eastern Tuna and Billfish Fishery off Mooloolaba. The fish is line-caught and Marine Stewardship Council certified and preserved in Australian olive oil.

Two products are being stocked by Coles nationwide: a 70g pouch and 200g jar of Australian albacore tuna in Australian olive oil.

The company developed the product with Australian chef Neil Perry, who said much of Australia’s premium tuna had traditionally been served in restaurants or exported.

“It’s fantastic to see more Australian consumers have better access to premium Australian preserved tuna,” he said.

Ms Walker said she hoped the national deal would also encourage shoppers to pay closer attention to the origin of their seafood.

“Choosing Australian tuna supports the people, families and regional communities behind our seafood industry,” she said.
