A group of Sunshine Coast high school and university students will showcase a full-scale electric flying taxi prototype next month after three years of design, construction and testing.
The project is part of a Manufacturing Excellence Forum Sunshine Coast (MEFSC) program that connects students with local industry professionals for hands-on engineering and computer-aided design experience.
Backed by a state government grant, the initiative has provided real-world design and build experience for 51 students, with parents and teachers describing it as life-changing.
For National Science Week 2026, the team will open its Warana workshop for the Future Flight Design Lab on Saturday, August 15 from 10am to 4pm.
The free, family-friendly event will feature flight simulators, 3D-printed gliders and STEM activities, alongside a close-up look at the student-built prototype.

The showcase highlights the region’s ambitions toward Brisbane 2032, with students positioning their work as part of South East Queensland’s growing advanced manufacturing and aviation sector.
The eVTOL program is delivered by MEFSC, a University of the Sunshine Coast-based network of manufacturers and industry partners, in collaboration with local mentors and the state government, which provided funding.
The Future Flight Design Lab will be held at 25 Premier Circuit, Warana, with free registration available here.
