The Acting Attorney-General has instructed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to lodge an appeal against sentences handed down in the Maroochydore Childrens Court.
Jarrod Bleijie issued a statement on Wednesday, detailing the process.
“On 23 August, a local IGA owner was attacked outside his store at Dicky Beach on the Sunshine Coast by a group of youths,” it read.
“The victim was kicked and punched, with the offenders continuing the assault after he had fallen to the ground.
“I have lodged an appeal on all four of the sentences because I consider them to be manifestly inadequate and, in my view, do not reflect the seriousness of the offending, the impact on the victim, or meet community expectations.
“The Crisafulli Government is committed to restoring accountability to Queensland’s justice system, ensuring offenders are met with serious consequences, and victims are put first.
“My thoughts are with the victim and his family.
“A Notice of Appeal will be lodged with the Court of Appeal registry on my behalf by the Director of Public Prosecutions.”
