A young woman has died and a man has been airlifted to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a fall at Mount Beerwah.
Emergency services were called to the Glass House Mountains peak just before 10.30am on Sunday following reports two people had fallen.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said they fell “a considerable distance”, with the woman dying from her injuries.
The man was flown by rescue helicopter to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
Queensland Fire Department crews, including a mountain rescue team, assisted with the rescue effort on the mountain.
Emergency services also helped four other people who were in the area at the time safely make their way down the mountain. They were not injured.
Crews remained on scene for several hours and wrapped up operations shortly after 3pm.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said a report would be prepared for the coroner.
“Police will prepare a report for the coroner following a non-suspicious death of a woman in Beerwah,” they said.
“As the matter is before the coroner, it would be inappropriate to comment further.”
Media reports have said the injured pair were both 18-year-olds from Brisbane and fell 50-100m while descending the summit track in light rain.
Mount Beerwah has been closed to the public since March 9 due to bad weather.
“All access routes on Mount Beerwah are temporarily closed due to high rainfall,” the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service park alert states.
“This closure is a precautionary measure following high-rainfall events. The risk of large rockfall above the summit route is much higher after heavy rain. This closure will be in place for a minimum of seven days.”
