Thirsty locals and visitors have filled the equivalent of 70,000 reusable water bottles with fresh, healthy drinking water over the last 12 months thanks to an initiative by a local water utility.

Unitywater’s Drink Tap van serviced 47 community, sporting and lifestyle events across the Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Moreton Bay communities over a 12-month period, including a busy stint over summer on Hastings Street, Noosa Heads.

Executive manager strategic engagement Joshua Zugajev said it was a pleasure to extend the delivery of clean drinking water beyond homes and businesses.

“It’s been fantastic to see the community welcoming our drink tap van to so many local events, where they can fill up for free and avoid purchasing single-use plastic bottles of water,” Mr Zugajev said.

“Single-use plastics contribute to the seven million tonnes of rubbish that end up in the ocean each year, which according to Healthy Land and Water, is made up by 80 per cent plastic.”

“By making water more readily available in the community we are supporting people to use their reusable water bottles every day to help reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles that often end up in landfill or our natural environment and waterways.”

The hydration van was stationed next to Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving club for several weeks during the recent summer school holidays.

“Having the van set up at such a busy and thriving holiday destination was a hit with tourists over the summer holidays,” Mr Zugajev said.

“We had a visitor from Victoria, Tony, share that he and his family used it to stay hydrated each day of their Noosa Heads camping trip while visiting the beach and Hastings Street family over the holiday period.”
