Site investigations have been completed at a busy Sunshine Coast intersection as planning continues for an upgrade first promised almost two years ago.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads said geotechnical and pavement investigations had been undertaken at the Caloundra Road and Bellvista Boulevard intersection at Little Mountain.
Work had also been carried out to identify underground services, while further site investigations would continue for the remainder of the year.
A TMR spokesperson said the information would help inform the design and construction planning, which was yet to be confirmed.
“When foundational stages are sufficiently progressed, a design will be prepared, in line with the government commitment,” the spokesperson said.
The project dates back to September 2024, when the then-LNP Opposition unveiled its $400 million Caloundra Congestion Busting Plan ahead of the state election.
The five-project package included an upgrade of the Bellvista Boulevard and Caloundra Road intersection, with the election commitment proposing traffic signals and slip lanes to and from Caloundra Road.
The $400 million was committed to the overall congestion-busting package rather than the Bellvista Boulevard project alone, and no individual construction budget for the intersection upgrade has been released.
The broader plan was included in the Queensland Transport and Roads Investment Program for the first time in June 2025, with the state government allocating funding towards planning for the program of works.
TMR said the upgrade was expected to improve safety and traffic flow, increase intersection capacity and reduce travel times and peak-hour congestion.
Almost 35,000 vehicles used Caloundra Road each day and almost 20,000 used Bellvista Boulevard.
TMR previously described the intersection as a key connection between the Bruce Highway and Caloundra South and Aura communities, and Caloundra and the coastal corridor.
“Continued traffic growth along Caloundra Road and Bellvista Boulevard, as well as from surrounding areas, highlights the need for upgrades to meet both current and future transport demands, including active transport needs,” a spokesperson said at the time.

The other projects in the Caloundra Congestion Busting package also includes the Nicklin Way to Third Avenue connection, an upgrade of the Caloundra Road, Kawana Way Link Road and Bells Creek Arterial Road intersection, improvements to the Caloundra Road, Nicklin Way and Pelican Waters Boulevard intersection and a future connection between Aura Boulevard and Pelican Waters Boulevard.
