One of the Sunshine Coast’s most recognised royal-watchers and dedicated community volunteers has passed away at the age of 84.
June Upton is being remembered as a strong and inspirational figure who touched countless lives through her charity work, community service and fondness for the royal family.
A mother of six daughters, Mrs Upton died peacefully on Saturday, August 30, surrounded by family.
Her daughter Kylie Upton said the family would forever treasure her mother’s example and influence.
“Our mother, June Upton, was a strong, inspirational guiding light for many. She gave so much to us, the many charities she served and the community,” she said.
“Her commitment to being of service was exemplary and we have endless love and gratitude for the boundless force she was.
“Mum touched many lives who will carry the blessings of her grace, heart and humour always. She mastered staying soft and strong in the world simultaneously.”
Mrs Upton became widely known for her heartfelt devotion to the royal family, often called upon by local media to share her knowledge, reflections and admiration for Queen Elizabeth II.
In a previous interview with Sunshine Coast News, she recalled her lifelong fascination with the beloved monarch that began when she was about five years old, when she heard the then-Princess Elizabeth speak on the radio.
“I was born in Nambour and my mother had a cafe,” Ms Upton said. “She had a tiny little radio and when I was only very young – I think it was my first year at school – I remember when Princess Elizabeth was talking on the radio and I turned around to my mother and I said, ‘Mum, have you heard this beautiful lady talking?’
“I asked her, ‘Who is it and where is she?’ and my mother replied, ‘It’s Princess Elizabeth.’
“I just loved listening to her and ever since then I’ve been a follower of the royal family.
“She has been an inspiration to everyone. I believe she’s almost perfect in every way. She never complained – and if she did, we didn’t hear about it.
“She’s just stopped the nation with so many billions of people watching.”
Mrs Upton kept a treasured keepsake to remind her of the Queen – a brooch that she bought at Buckingham Palace when she worked as a guide for Australian tourists to London.
A service to celebrate Mrs Upton’s life will be held at Gregson and Weight in Buderim at 9.30am today.
“Travel peacefully Mum,” her daughter Kylie said. “We will honour and remember you for the great work you did on Earth for so many but especially for us, your six daughters. We are your lasting legacy, and we love and thank you.”
