The public are being invited to take a walk through a slice of Sunshine Coast history right on Buderim’s doorstep.
The Heritage Tramway Walking Track, which has been developed by Sunshine Coast Council in conjunction with Buderim-Palmwoods Heritage Tramway Inc, stretches along 2km of the old tramway line which operated between Buderim and Palmwoods from 1914 to 1935.
The walk is through regrowth forest and bushland featuring interesting local flora, signage at key points and affording plenty of photo opportunities.
It starts at Telco Road off Mons Road.
It’s a self-guided walk suitable for all ages, is relatively flat and has wheelchair access.
There’s a car park opposite but, according to BPHTI President, Helene Cronin OAM, it is now often filled to capacity and improvements are needed to accommodate the ever-increasing numbers of walkers and runners using the track.
“People are coming from near and far to walk the track and BPHTI are continuing to work with Sunshine Coast council to improve the track and make it a major attraction to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,” she said.
“One of the things needed is a drinking fountain and Member for Buderim, Brent Mickelberg, has kindly agreed to fund this.”

She also said that Council are undertaking some long-term planning to extend the track to eventually connect up with Buderim and hopefully all the way to Forest Glen.
On May 1, BPHTI members will hold a conducted walk down the track as their contribution to the National Trust of Queensland’s Heritage Month.
Guides will give a running commentary on points of interest, the history of the Tramway and the on-going efforts of BPHTI to have the original Krauss locomotive displayed in central Buderim.
Everyone is welcome to attend and walkers are asked to meet at the start of the track in Telco Road at 2pm. It will take about an hour and a half and it’s free.
