A tree may have saved a paraglider from crashing into the Kings Beach Surf Life Saving Club this afternoon.

Sunshine Coast Council chief lifeguard Trent Robinson said witnesses saw the paraglider fall at about 12.50pm.

“Apparently, he was paragliding just off the headland at pretty good altitude and suddenly, he started spiralling out of control,” he said.

“If it wasn’t for him hitting that tree, he would have gone into the surf club, and the glass of the surf club.”

Mr Robinson said lifeguards responded to a call about the accident and assisted paramedics who were already on the scene.

Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed that paramedics, including critical care paramedics, attended to the man, who had fallen about 6m.

The man, in his 50s, was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital with life-threatening back injuries. His condition, initially critical, is now listed as stable.
