Former AFL and rugby stars, local politicians, media personalities, a reality TV star and club legends are all set for the inaugural Sunshine Coast Big Freeze this weekend.

Caloundra Panthers Football Club will host the event at Carter Park, to raise funds for motor neurone disease (MND) research.

Event organiser Kerryn Nelson said she was thrilled to have a stellar-line up of participants including dual AFL premiership star Corey McKernan, former Wallaby Blake Enever, local councillor Terry Landsberg, Caloundra MP Jason Hunt, Australian Survivor star Gerry Geltch, media identities Luke Forrest, Elly Chaney and Todd Widdicombe, as well as a number of club stalwarts.

“This is a real passion project for me and I’m thrilled with the response from the club, the broader community and the 10 brave personalities who are prepared to slide into the icy cold water in order to raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease research,” she said.

“Australia has been captivated and motivated by Neale Daniher’s inspirational MND journey and it’s great to see football clubs like Caloundra now doing their bit to raise funds for this important cause.

“We’ll also have our new mayor Rosanna Natoli coming along to officially open our inaugural event.

“We’d love to welcome everyone to come down to the club to enjoy a day filled with fun, excitement and a few icy chills as these local heroes take the plunge to support this important cause.”

The event starts at noon on Saturday, with the Big Freeze starting from 1.30pm.
