One of the Sunshine Coast’s busiest and best-known intersections is set to be upgraded, to improve safety for pedestrians.
Work will start soon at the Maroochydore Road intersection with Horton Parade, Beach Road and Ocean Street at Maroochydore.
The $3.4m improvements are set to provide pedestrians with easier and safer commutes, between the area’s shopping, hospitality and education venues.
The left-turn slip lanes will be removed and traffic signals will be updated to accommodate motorists turning left, in and out of Ocean Street.
The improvements will also include installing a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Beach Road and changes to the existing pedestrian crossings.
Works will include fitting additional pedestrian fencing on the median strip to encourage people to use the dedicated pedestrian crossings.
Works will take place at night and are expected to take about five months, weather and construction conditions permitting.
The improvements will be be delivered under the Queensland Government’s Targeted Road Safety Program, which aims to improve road safety by implementing high-benefit, cost-effective treatments at known and potential crash locations.
Assistant Regional Roads Minister Bruce Saunders said the works would make the intersection safer and efficient as the city centre continues to develop.
“This is one of the busiest pockets of Maroochydore with major shopping centres, an entertainment precinct and bus connections,” he said via a state government press release.
“Significant new development in the area has been approved for the already busy CBD and these works will prepare us to keep the growing numbers of people walking and driving through here safe.”
